Explain How contingency factors determine organization

Introduction

When Beth Israel Hospital Director of Nursing took over she faced a structural dilemma. The structure of the Beth Israel Hospital Nursing was complex. Bolman & Deal (2013) states that complex structures are when there are roles in which many people do different things. In the situation of Beth Israel there was a gap in the structure as the least prepared employee had the hardest job and had to ask (several position above) for normal daily procedures. The nursing aids were overused. To do a simple procedure the permission had to go from the nursing aids to their supervisor, then further on to the doctor. This caused a lack of correct information, which cause a simple question to up and down the chain for an answer.

Analysis Beth Israel Hospital’s restructuring

The Director of Nursing used differentiation to restructure positions in order to streamline the operations for both the staff’s and the patient’s wellbeing. Contingency theory defines the improbability as the inconstant which makes the organization dependent upon the environment (Nobre, Tobias, & Walker, 2010). Organizational design, and choice, is contingent on the idea of uncertainty (Nobre, Tobias, & Walker, 2010). Uncertainty is associated with intentions of restricted judiciousness. In this viewpoint, uncertainty carries the denotation of the lack of information, which leads the organization to irregularity of outcomes, in addition to insufficiency of reasoning for over-all information-processing and clarification (Nobre, Tobias, & Walker, 2010).

Contingency theory claims that organization performance is contingent on an assortment of factors. The organization must consider the in-house capabilities as well as peripheral conditions in maneuvering their strategy for success (Martin B. Mezner: & Julius H. Johnson, 2016). To be considered optimal, the organizational structure will lead to the optimization of the performance of the organization by ensuring that tasks, activities, and people are organized in a way to ensure that goals are achieved (Galetic, Maric, & Aleksic, 2016). Restructuring encompasses that judicious choices among the innumerable alternatives that are available. Mangers analyze the situation challenging their organization, then select and implement the change in structure that appears most fitting (Galetic, Maric, & Aleksic, 2016).

Conclusion

Having been in a situation where we spent a lot of time in a hospital I couldn’t imagine the frustration that Beth Israel Hospital’s previous staffing would have caused. The case showed a leader that evaluated their situation and made steps to create a more efficient workplace. The case showed that the restructuring was a success and widely copied (Bolman & Deal, 2013). While no change is ever a permanent solution, the restructuring that Beth Israel Hospital Director of Nursing implemented will assist in future problems that need resolved. By making the situation appropriate for the current needs, allows for easier changes to be made for future issues.
